Terpinolene is a fresh, complex terpene with piney, floral, and citrus notes, found in cannabis, nutmeg, and lilac. Less common than other terpenes, it adds a unique herbal depth to strains and may offer antioxidant and antibacterial benefits. A great pick for consumers seeking distinctive, fresh-smelling genetics.
Properties
Terpinolene is a versatile monoterpene with a complex aroma that blends fresh pine, floral herbs, and hints of citrus and woodsy earthiness, making it one of the harder terpenes to pin down with a single scent note. It's found in cannabis alongside nutmeg, tea tree, apples, cumin, and lilac. Despite being less common than terpenes like myrcene or limonene, terpinolene is notably present in certain sativa-leaning strains. Research points to potential antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal properties, along with sedative effects in some studies, an interesting contrast to its association with uplifting sativa genetics. It's also being explored for possible anti-inflammatory and anticancer activity. Terpinolene is highly volatile and oxidizes quickly when exposed to air, so strains high in this terpene benefit from careful, airtight storage to preserve freshness.
Common Uses
In cannabis, terpinolene contributes a fresh, complex aroma that adds depth to fruity or piney strain profiles, often found in strains with a lighter, more herbal character. It's popular among consumers seeking unique, less common flavor profiles. Outside of cannabis, terpinolene is widely used in soaps, perfumes, and household cleaners for its fresh, woodsy scent, and occasionally as a natural insect repellent.
